Interesting side note. Except South Africa, though we're rapidly following suit, the "dodgy" Wizkids stuff is outselling Games Workshop by massive amounts, including embarressingly in england. Interesting and horrible. Nevertheless, Wizkids stuff hasn't had too much success here, from what I've seen. I think the reason Wizkids has so much success is because their games are simple enough to be playable by the 9-12 age range, a group that GW's games leave out due to the effort in terms of painting and rules required to master GW's games. However, take it from me, you don't want to play with the 9-12 age range. In most cases, as they're absolutely without a doubt the most irritating bunch of humanoids on the planet and can be safelyu disregarded as "real" wargamers - OopMan Oh, another pertinent note. While Wizkids games look cheaper to play, they're not! Unlike like GW, Wizkids uses a MTG-style system of common, uncommon and rare miniatures. The minis come in randomly assorted "Booster" packs (Wow, the smell of MTG in the morning :-) that might contain good shit, but usually contain crap. Since you're aiming to play a specific type of army, one built from one particular faction within the game, you end up having to buy mountains of stuff. The result? A Warhammer 40K army of 1500pts is cheaper to put together than a reasonably good collection of MageKnight - OopMan |
