CLAWs IDENTITY NUMBER (CIN)
Wishlist: SinWishlist
Parent: ClawnetWishlist
Maintainer: WebMonkey? &/or Committee
Status: Proposal, we need to choose something
Description: unique ID; add your contender to the list or comment on SinWishlist
Proposal
for databasing, website onlogging and other purposes we need to
have some kinda unique ID number for CLAWmembers; in the end it
doesn't matter what it actually is, but it would be useful for
it to be
- easy to remember (for the CLAWmember concerned)
- easy to generate (for database maintainers)
- able to be stuck in front of @claws.uct.ac.za (see EekWishlist)
- kewl (but not k3\\\7, obviously)
Contenders (add your own)
UCT student number
- eg, LVCHOW007?
- easy to remember and generate, except for...
- non-UCT CLAWmembers (ie, groupies)
- not uniquely CLAWsy?
ID number
- I don't know why but nobody liked this when I first proposed CIN many moons ago, maybe because it's
- not uniquely CLAWsy?
ISBN of favourite book
- eg, 006097625X
- inbuilt well formed rule and 10^9 combinations!
- can cover many variations of same book (ie, if you both like HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix? one can choose hard cover ISBN, one soft cover ISBN)
- confusing if we ever do book reviews ;)
- not easy to remember (though not strictly harder than a phone number, just 10 digits, less if you drop leading zeroes!)
- not easy to generate
d@vid's algorithm
- YYMMDDNN-T, eg 800419DS-1
- where YYMMDD is birthday, NN is initials and
- T is rolled on a d12 (1-9::1-9, 10::0, 11::A, 12::B)
- up to twelve people with the same dob and initials catered for!
- easy to generate, only one digit to remember
- not exactly a barrel full of monkeys
username
- a simple all-lowercase word
- first come first served
- not a number (oh well)
- not easy to generate
- as kewl as the CLAWmember that creates it ;>
