! Next week has been cancelled. I am in a strange ass mood and need to take a break from people before I lose my cool. Actually, since this has never really taken off, I am cancelling the whole thing for now.

Um... dude, the notice was above... what are you looking here for?

Report Back on Previous Games Days

Report back for 21st February

To be honest, I was a little worried that no-one would turn up (because they may have forgotten about it). Then, I was worried that too many people would turn up (after trying to play Ninja Burger on Thursday night). In the end, the perfect number of people arrived at the perfect times.

The first to arrive was Garrick, who arrived 30 minutes early, which was cool, because it gave us some time to chat. Then, Ian and Michelle arrived, on time. While waiting for more people to arrive (we started at 3:45), we played a quick game of Chez Grunt. It was way cool, and I ended up winning because my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty... you know... Army Job) was removed the previous round when I had LOADS of slack, so the next round I picked a new MOS and played a whenever card that gave me some more slack...

And, since no-one else had arrived, we decided to play the Dork Tower game. Setup was a bitch, because we had to poke out a million game pieces out of carboard cutouts, and construct the 3-D tower (which even though Carson could do it, took a little time to figure out). Halfway through reading the rules, Yanke arrived, to complete the party. So, with all the pieces poked out, and the rules read, we started to play. The first couple of rounds were a bit slow as we got into the swing of things, but by the end things were rollicking along. The nice thing about Dork Tower is that you are never forced to go for the win (like in Munchkin). You get to choose when you would like to make a play for the win. Because of this, the game time can vary quite a bit as people decide to keep playing the outer edges and not go into the middle.

At the beginning of the game, Garrick had a few really good encounters and went up in level and up in power really quickly. The rest of us kind of lagged behind and I was the last person to level up as I was using my XP for other things. Eventually, Garrick got very powerful and went for the win. The first load of monsters he picked were all rather low level, so it looked like he might win easily, but then Yanke played a scroll (it's like a curse, if played on another player) on him, and he needed to pick a new set of monsters... that ended up killing him!! Oh, too bad. Eventually, Garrick, Ian and Michelle needed to go, so the last few rounds had to be played fast. I tried to go for the win, but Yanke refused to let anyone get off easy and so sent me accross the board, nowhere close to winning. So then Ian could go for the win, and managed it. Congrats! Dork Tower is definitely much better than Chez Dork. I can not wait to play it again.

So Garrick left straight away and Ian and Michelle left a few minutes later. About a minute later, my bell rings and I thought it was Ian or Michelle wanting to come back in to pick up something they had forgotten, but it was d@vid and Tim.

d@vid had been desperately wanting to play Munchkin, so we started to play classic Munchkin. And it was a great game. Almost every round there was some kind of messing with a combat. If the combat was not messed with, there were blackmails to not mess with it. In fact, with in the first two rounds, at least 2 combats were messed with to the detriment of the fighting player. It was great. Your tactics have to change dramatically when you are never sure how the other players will react to your "Looking for Trouble". Yanke was probably a bit guilty of "playing the man, not the cards" as he seemed to target me for most of his attacks. Of course, not every time was he successful. Once, I ressurected the 16th level Hippogriff (I was a cleric) and went into combat with it. Yanke was determined to make me lose, and so enraged it. I played another card, and so he Mated it. I then neatly Magic Lamp'ed the mate away. He then had no more cards to play and none of the other two players was willing to get involved and so I defeated the Hippo and got it's 2 levels, and 4 treasures, plus one more treasure for Enraged... PLUS 5 treasures for it's Mate!!

I can not for the life of me remember (Gods, I am getting old) what monster I went up against for the win, but I was beating it easily. The only person with a card left to play was Yanke who went looking for a decent combat ending card with his Wand Of Dowsing... but I annihilated it before he found anything, and so there was nothing else anyone could play to stop me... Muhaha!!

Since it was still kinda early, we decided to show d@vid Munchkin Fu as well. Tim had already played it at Dragonfire and was keen to play it again. This was a more typical game (which was a pity, as I was hoping for a game much like the one before), with only the combats to level 10 being messed with. At one stage, we were ALL at level 9, but it took FIVE more rounds before some-one eventually won. Early in the game, I traded Tim for the Big Black .45 (+5, usable by Yakuza only... and I was a Yakuza). I then cheated it (so that if ever I lost Yakuza, I could still carry it), and then added "... of my Grandfather" (+2 bonus) some time later. Near the end of the game, d@vid went up against the Mecha Ninja that he was beating easily... but then in jogged Jogira (courtesy of Yanke)... and stomped all over him. He rolled to get away... and Succeeded... twice... but ran into the great wall of China (thank you, thank you very much... I'll be here all week)... and both monsters killed him. I managed to get the Honorable Brothers In Arms card... and applied it to my .45. I now had TWO Cheated Big Black .45s of my Grandfather, for a +14.

And the end was very tense. We all knew that Yanke had the Spirit Mirror. What we did not know, was that he had been dealt the Practice match at the begiining of the game. Tim went for the win first against the Dragon Lady. But after quite a few cards were played (including d@vid using the Spirit Monkey Guide to pick up the Friendly Geisha trap, that R@p3d!!! Tim of all his cool items), the combat was ended with the Practice Match. The next major combat was the one when d@vid was killed by the Mecha Ninja and Jogira. Since I knew Yanke had the Spirit Mirror, I cursed myself with a level loss, and went looking for trouble just to get some more treasure, but I got crap. Tim then went for the win again, but was up against a Style Gaki... and so it was upped by arb cards and he had to run away. Yanke could not catch a break, and did not encounter a monster. d@vid then rose from the dead, picked up his 8 cards, played some items and went up against Rokurokubi, which he was beating... But we added one or two cards, and so he had to run away. Since I knew the Spirit Mirror was still in Yanke's hand, I did not go looking for trouble on my turn, but just got some alley cards. Tim then went for the win AGAIN... but this time his combat was ended by the Spirit Mirror, and so he picked up his 4 treasures. Yanke then turned up a "Lose your Headgear" trap, and lost all his cool head gear (just as he was about to equip Bull Kung Fu... get triple your head gear). But he went looking for trouble against a level 1 Ugly Little Idol, and was about to win when Tim stole a level from him... so all he could do was get back his ninth level and one treasure. d@vid then failed to get a monster, and so I had to go. I picked up the Dancing style enhancement (discard ONE card used to aid a monster) and went looking for trouble against a level 1 Tu Phat Demon that I had been holding onto since very early on in the game. In the end, I was on level 44 against it's one... I had one wishing ring and the Fox Kung Fu as Trap defense and I could discard one card to aid this monster... Yes, I won that game as well. Though I would not have, had Tim not stolen Yanke's level a combat earlier. I was a tad lucky, but I am going to claim that I played that game tactically, very well.

We finished at 1:15am. So... 9 and a half hours of uninterrupted game play. What a cool day. I can not wait for next week.

btw... I have been told that next week is Maynardville, so we will be ending early to go through, and I will postpone my 12 hour movie marathon to the following week.

  • d@vid Feb 23 2004: that Friendly Geisha trap is of the devil, it 0wnZ0rrD me earlier in the game, hence my pleasure in unleashing it on someone else; and next time I'm going to call those bluffs, dammit - re the discussion about Munchkin Discworld, are there examples elsewhere of similiar tweaks? (I recall there's a wikipage of CLAWs cards somewhere?)
