Chess Club

Speed draughts (from OldiesMeeting)

  • a game of live-action speed draughts
  • one member of each society will be the actual player, other members are the pieces
  • the CLAWs team dress in black, Chess team in white, kings are noted by the wearing of any form of hat
  • squares can be marked using black duct-tape crosses
  • it shouldn't be a problem to have people walking through the board, and the idea is presence as well as good fun
  • 5 seconds/move. Otherwise when it slows down you end up staring at that guy in front of you for 10 solid minutes and it gets kinda weird.

FilmSoc

  • i remember when i joined claws (way back when in the summer of '99) there were regular showings of anime by filmsoc. also, claws would often get hold of MST3K?/sci-fi/fantasy movies and show them on campus. while ShadowsLight is doing an admirable job with his TNM, something actually on campus or in a large venue (where does filmsoc show their movies now?) would be great for attracting larger audiences, and pumping roleplaying while we're at it (fliers, a showing of 'The Gamers' etc). perhaps we could organise to share facilities with filmsoc, creating an alternative filmsoc subdivision? posters that say 'FilmSoc and CLAWs presents:' will prolly get more hits than posters that say 'CLAWs presents:', given the unfortunate reputation we have on campus, and the continuing success of FilmSoc. If they're serious about film, they should be open to alternative film - MoonFlake 22/09/04

SCA

(not a UCT society, but, y'know)

Battle Chess

others?

General InterSocieties Comments

OopMan - Is there a Go society at UCT or not? Although I don't recall seeing one in the prospectus my sister, who is involved with the Go soc at Wits, says there is indeed one in CT and possibly at UCT. Anyway, why not play speed-Go? Go is great, way better than Chess...

~GeekDotIdon?'tBotherToSign - 'cause the idea was that the games would go more or less quickly, and go can go on forever. and checkers is much quicker than chess, and less complicated. maybe chess can be done at a later stage, but everyone'd need to dress up as a knight or bishop or whatever. more complicated.

OopMan - Erm, I did say Speed Go. Ie, not taking years per turn. But, yeah, Go is less feasbile, as even a small game needs more meat-puppets than Chess. Also, said meat puppets would get bored standing about for the rest of the game. Maybe we should do a 3-way thing with the SCA - Battle Chess!!!
