History of the Guard of Twelve

The King has always had an elite Guard of Twelve Paladin Knights. They have sworn to protect, sworn to serve, sworn to die (if necessary) in the defence of The King. And when the king dies, it is the duty of the Twelve to seek out the next king (as kingship does not pass by birth, but by Divine Providence). In this way, the kingdom of Surren has always had a strong and just leader.

Each of the Twelve gives up his given name, for the name of his post, for as one Knight dies, another takes his place and commands his duties. They are named for the Twelve Apostles, and the names of twelve beasts of Lore, which help to describe their role in the Twelve.

They are named as follows:

1 Peter the Dragon (Leader of the Twelve)
2 Andrew the Centaur (Captain of the Royal Guard) 3 James the Leviathan (Judge of Crimes)
4 John the Pegasus (Transport Captain) 5 Phillip the Manticore (General of the Armies)
6 Bartholomew the Cerberus (Diplomat) 7 Thomas the Unicorn (Healer of Wounded)
8 Matthew the Griffin (Lore Keeper) 9 Paul the Minotaur (Master of Tactics)
10 Jude the Ceruleas (Holder of Knowledge) 11 Simon the Phoenix (Seeker of the King)
12 Judas the Basilisk (Royal Treasurer)

While the King is alive, the most important Knight is the Dragon, the Leader of the Twelve. It is his job to co-ordinate the Twelve. Each of the Twelve has a specific duty during times of war. The Centaur is the Captain of the King’s Guard, protecting him at all times. The Minotaur is the war tactician, and it is his duty to decide the strategy for the King’s Campaign’s from the information given to him by Jude. It is the Manticore’s duty to lead the army, and the Pegasus’s duty to make sure the army gets to where it needs to go. And once war has begun, it is the Unicorn’s duty to make sure the army is well cared for during battle. Once war is over, it is the Cerberus' duty to work out the peace agreement, and the Griffin’s duty to document it. The Leviathan must ratify any agreements made, and dole out punishments for any and all war crimes. And the Basilisk must ensure that the King’s Coffers can afford the war in the first place, and are well refunded afterwards.

And finally, there is the Phoenix. It is his job to find the new king, when the old king is dead. When the new king is found, he is Kinged by James, and schooled by the Twelve in matters of Kingship.

And this has worked for hundreds of years… until now.

The Guard of Twelve - Present

For the Twelve have been corrupted. Judas the Basilisk, in his greed for power and influence, has usurped the throne. He discredited the Judge and had him banished from new Aginor. And then he appointed his own brother as the new Judge. He then killed the Centaur and the king (this was secretly witnessed by Andrew’s son, a knight that would soon be one of the Twelve). Simon, an old and almost senile man, could not go out and look for a new king, and was influenced by Judas (and many drugs) to call Judas the new king. Once made king, Judas disbanded the Twelve and either imprisoned, killed or banished its members.

Andrew’s son knew that Judas was no king. He went to go talk to Simon to find out why he had called Judas king, but when he arrived at Simon’s room, he found Simon almost dead. His age, and the Blue Lotus he had been fed by Judas, had taken its toll. Simon told Andrew’s son, who was named for the old Phoenix, to take up the post of Seeker after he died, and go out and find the true king. A day later, Simon was dead, and Andrew’s son, now known as Simon the Phoenix made a pledge to a) seek out a new king, b) revenge his father’s death and c) restore the Guard of Twelve.

And he had a vision that his new king would come from a land far, far away…

So he is now searching for the king, and hoping to find some of the banished members of the Twelve (he knows that the original James, Bartholomew and Jude have made it out of Surren safely) and he hopes to find them, and hopefully any others to help him.
