Precursor Site Targetted by Terrorists

The valuable Precursor archeological site was the target of a terrorist attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning (3040.20.5). On Tuesday night (3040.20.4) a technical crew from Royal Tri-V arrived to setup camera equipment that was used to conceal weapons and demolitions from the tight security around the site. Then around 02h00 (A4T?) all hell broke loose as Xenoranger guards were shot down and priceless finds were destroyed.

The motive for the attack is not known at this time, but one of the terrorists is being held for questioning by the on-site Xenorangers under the authority of the Planetary Infringement Retribution Subcommittee. The rest of the crew, due to arrive later in the day denied any connection to the incident earlier in the day. Renowneed Tri-V director, Alee Deinon, is still hopeful that filming might still proceed at a later date.

Vigilantes Targeting Gang

Another gang battle erupted in the vicinity of 107th Street on Monday evening (3040.20.4). Once again a gang armed only with steel-clubs was defeated by laser pistols. The bodies of the dead from last week's battle have been identified as members of the "14th Cactuses", a gang notorious in the western quarter of the Upper City. Officials have speculated that this may be an attempt by the Cactuses to extend their area of control. The heavy handed response seems to be the work of locals fighting to keep the streets of the Lower City safe from the Upper City's petty gangs.

The latest battle resulted in no casualties but authorities are treating it very seriously. Administration has targetted violence in the Lower City as a primary focus area.

Memorial Service for Governor's Son

A memorial service will be held for Adjahar Buhal in the Royal Auditorium on Friday evening (3040.20.7.19). This promises to be the event of the year, as Wehar Buhal, the governor himself, is to attend. The service will be presided over by Sri Chainoya.

Tickets for the service will be 5 credits seating and 100 credits for a private booth (maximum 5 entities).

Editorial - Preserve our Heritage

I can only express dismay and shame that our fellow citizens have caused irrepairable damage to the most culturally significant find of the millenium. I for one am fully behind the order and security that the Xenorangers bring to our planet (and I often wish our local security forces were more like them) but even they are vulnerable to the cheap and dastardly tactics of terrorists. Although relations between the Xenocologists and the Royalists have never been very friendly, they have at least been cordial. This latest event threatens to change all that, bringing about a state of open conflict that this planet must desperately avoid. And I doubt that even Prince Shiman would have sunk so low as to destroy the galaxy's heritage.

Gang Battle Leaves Four Dead

Two days ago, the usually quiet residential area around 107th Street was the scene of a short, but bloody, battle between two rival gangs. The only witness to the event was Mike Macarthur, a security guard at the Royal Hotel, who reported that one side, equipped with laser pistols, had quickly overpowered the gang members armed only with steel-clubs. Four men were left at the scene of the battle who were either dead, or died before medical personnel could reach them.

Exclusive Look at Precursor Site

Citizens of Asalon 4 and local star systems will soon get their first look at the mysterious Precursor civilization. The Royal, through their subsidiary, Royal Tri-V, has obtained the exclusive rights to document the archeological site near the city.

The excavation at the Precursor site is being managed by the Planetary Infringement Retribution Subcommittee, a decision by the Administration that is still being hotly contested. Royal Tri-V and the PIR Subcommittee came to an agreement earlier in the week which would give the entertainment group access to areas of the site that have been thoroughly cleared.

"Unfortunately, many areas of the site are too sensitive for Tri-V crews and their equipment to film properly," said Alee Deinon, Tri-V documentary director for Royal Tri-V. "But we'll certainly endeavour to answer all the questions the public has about this exciting find."

Governor's Son Medical Cover-up

Although the investigation into the death of the governor's son, Adjahar Buhal, continues, a frustrating development has taken place. Yesterday governor Wehar Buhal officially censured the city hospital after failing to co-operate with Imperial Investigators. "That the medical fraternity needs to be coerced into assisting the law is intolerable," said governor Buhal in his statement.

Dr Jonathon Smythe responded by saying that after an initial misunderstanding, the hospital was providing its full co-operation. "Unfortunately, due to patient confidentiality, Adjahar's medical records aren't available to just anyone, and so background checks need to be performed on all individuals requesting the records."

However, it has since been revealed that the Adjahar's medical records are no longer available on the hospital computer system.

Editorial - Contra Contraband

Many of our readers are probably not aware that energy weapons and balistic firearms heavier than a pistol are illegal on Asalon 4. And yet every Tom, Dick and Hrk'thy seems to have one, not to mention the fact that they are all easily purchased at the Starport (at a steep price, and even then the quality is suspect). Isn't it time for the authorities to clamp down on this complete disregard for the law? And while they're at it, why not challenge the rampant illegal drugs and other lynchpins of criminal society? It's not that the authorities don't have enough resources to do this; the problem is clearly that they lack motivation - as if the rampant crime in our city isn't enough to move them into action.

Governor's Son Slain

Adjahar Buhal (21), the prominent son of Asalon 4's governor, Wehar Buhal, was brutally slain in the early hours of Tuesday morning (3040.19.15). Officials reported that Adjahar's body was found in a terribly mutilated state, and that he had been savagely beaten to death. Adjahar had been seen at his favourite haunt, the Royal, earlier that night but his actions after leaving the entertainment paradise are not yet known.

Wehar Buhal issued a statement from his office on the Asalon 4 Orbital Station: "I am greatly angered by the seemingly senseless killing of my son and I shall spare no resources in finding out who the monsterous perpetrators are. My request for assistance from Earth has been answered and a number of Class A Imperial Investigators are on their way to bring justice for my son."

Archeological Site Protected

The controversial Precursor site to the south of Asalon City is now to be protected by the Planetary Infringement Retribution Subcommittee under the auspices of Warden Rastnif-Smythe, the Administration announced on Friday (3040.19.14). The site, purported to contain evidence of a civilization predating the Empire, has become a major talking point for the planet's administration in past weeks. The decision to effectively hand the site over to the PIRS ends days of speculation over the site's future.

As to the nature of the site, PIRS archeologists reported disappointing findings. "It is likely to take several decades before any significant advances can be made in the understanding of this site," they announced yesterday. Access to the site is now restricted to authorized personell only.

Virtual Lives Legalized

In what is seen by many as a major boost to the quality of leisure for the planet's citizens, the use of the popular Virtual Life Simulator (TM) has been legalized under controlled circumstances. Because of the system's dependance on the dangerous hallucinogenic, Kironeme X, the Mega-Virtuosity Corp's life simulator is illegal on over a hundred planets.

The Administration's decision to allow the use of such simulators by approved operators has been approved by entertainment providers and slammed by various lobby groups. In the Administration's report, it was made clear that "people have nothing to fear since safety is our primary concern. Only those operators who can prove that simulators will be run in risk-free environments will receive operating permits." So far, only the Royal has been issued with such a permit.

Dega Withdraws

In a surprise move on Friday (3040.19.18), Dega Enterprise's local branch chairman, Xu Fredericks, announced his company's decision to abandon its operations on Asalon 4, effective immediately. This ends years of economic competition between Dega Enterprises and the local Haupt Consortium that has put much financial pressure on both companies. In the past, Haupt Consortium CEO, Julian Haupt, has denied preferential treatment from Asalon 4 governor, Wehar Buhal, that has enabled the company to stay afloat for so long. However, the surprising success of Haupt Consortium over its competition, has floundered many business analysts.

As part of its withdrawal, Dega Enterprises has ceded control over its starport terminals to Haupt Consortium, resulting in all Asalon 4's starports being under Haupt Consortium control. Administration says they are "aware of the monopolistic problems involved, but ... do not anticipate having to take any correcting action."

Editorial - A Deserving Father

Life is unfair - it's a truism of the galaxy we've known since before we took to the stars. And it couldn't be better exemplified by the sad demise of Adjahar Buhal last Tuesday. We all know that Adjahar wasn't the perfect citizen - he was often involved in fights and drunken behaviour - but the point here is that we all knew him. He was a man of the people, a deity's son living amongst us and seeing the world from an average citizen's point of view. In that respect, Adjahar has become like a son to us all, and his death is mourned by his family - the citizens of Asalon 4.

But while the much-loved son was slain, the disinterested father continues to draw breath. Enclosed in his ivory tower of the Orbital Station, Wehar Buhal, has not set foot on the planet for his entire 10 year tenure as Asalon 4 governor. If it weren't for the evidence of his son, Wehar could be a six-armed Jeakl. Wehar's policies, which have been baffling at times, have done nothing to alleviate the factionalism and crime rife in the City. Perhaps if he would take the time to see the planet through our point of view, he would be a better governor - and perhaps still a decent father.
