Asalon Four

No email!

At the moment I'm sitting without a computer account and hence no email. I have no idea how long it will be before I can log in again - they've assured me end of the week, but I'm not counting on it.

So with that in mind, I'm going to put up one page for each email player. That page is for that player only. On it will be the feedback for the latest turn and the player can then post his faction's actions for the next turn. The next turn actions are due for Wednesday 17th.

Relevant players only:
TurnHaupt? TurnXeno
TurnRoyal? (pages will be updated ASAP)

All players (and others following the campaign) should check out the summary of events (significant and not so significant) on the AsalonNews page.

Blurb

The powerful Empire of Man is constantly expanding its borders among the stars. In its constant quest for expansion, many frontier worlds are settled without much support from the Empire. This leaves those worlds open for opportunistic fortune hunters or idealists intent on putting their mark on the new world. Asalon 4 is dominated by three factions - the money hungry Haupt Consortium, the hedonist Royalists and the idealistic Xenocologists. The planet's imperial governor lives off-world, but when his son is killed in Asalon 4's only city, the governor is quick to act and bring in the Empire's best investigating agents. The factions all blame each other and the agents must delve into the planet's dark secrets to find out the truth behind the assassination.

System

This is an EmailTop game, though the EmailTop system should be transparent to the normal players so you need not read through all that info. The roleplaying system being used is SkillTwenty. If you've played any D20 games (such as D&D 3E), you will catch on to SkillTwenty instantly.

Background

Asalon 4 is a backward planet, almost forgotten in the Empire's diaspora. While it does have a small amount of industry, this is mainly geared towards supporting the economic backbone of the planet, agriculture. Although not a lush planet, the soil is good and many crops grow very well in Asalon 4 conditions. The food is exported to the central worlds of the Empire in exchange for technological luxuries.

Since much of the planet is turned over to farming, there is only one settlement of note on the planet - Asalon 4 City, located in the base of a great ravine, protecting it from the planet's constant winds. The city is divided into three parts.

The first part, the upper city, towards the upper portion of the ravine, is the industrial and food processing sector. With mostly factories and low-cost housing, the upper portions of these factories are above the ravine edge so that the foul odours and smoke get a chance to blow away. Despite this precaution, conditions in the upper city are still unpleasant since there are no regulations in place to set standards in this part of the city.

The second part, the lower city, in the lowest portion of the ravine, houses the nicer residences, shops and entertainment areas. Major attractions here are the Administration building (housing the Administration that governs the planet) and the Royal Hotel and Casino. Many of the residents of the lower city are owners of the shops, factories or farms. However, not all areas in the lower city are upmarket - there are many seedy areas rife with prostitution, drugs and crime.

The third part of the city is the starport located half a kilometre to the west of the ravine. The starport is actually one large building but is the size of many blocks in the city. The roof of the starport has eight landing pads for commercial and passenger ships of all shapes and sizes. The Asalon 4 starport is not always busy with exporting food or importing technology, but it is almost always willing to host low-profile smugglers who can't afford to bribe the officials at richer central planets.

Although strictly speaking not part of the city, the orbital station plays a critical role in the planet's functioning. It houses Asalon 4's governor, Wehar Buhal, who oversees the Administration.

Although the governor and the Administration nominally run Asalon 4, the planet is in fact really under the control of three power groups.

The first group is the Haupt Consortium, a company founded by entrepeneur Julian Haupt. Following the withdrawal of Dega Enterprises from the planet, the Haupt Consortium is in sole control of the Starport and regulates almost all of the planet's commerce. Farm owners, traders, businessmen, ship pilots and port workers feel the Consortium's influence.

The second group is the Royalists based around the Royal Hotel and Casino. They are led by the enigmatic Avi Shiman who claims to be the exiled crown prince of New Persia. The Royal provides exquisite entertainment, catering to rich and poor alike. There are few people who can honestly claim to never visit the Royal since what ever your fancy, you can find it at the Royal.

The third group is the Xenocologists, a multi-planet idealistic faction working towards preserving each planet's ecology. Their political body, the Planetary Infringement Retribution Subcommitee, headed by Warden Rastnif-Smythe, has significant influence in the local Administration of which the Warden is a member. It does not limit itself to simply discussing policy matters, however, as it has an active body of Xenorangers to implement those policies. Many citizens, especially those amongst the first founders, are sympathetic to their cause. Its most vocal support comes from the planet's non-human minority.

Any queries about the backround, or anything else about Asalon 4 that you need to know - just write in a comment below and I'll get around to answering it or updating the background.
