I find myself once again wondering where my weekend has vanished to. Sure I had a great time but there has to be more of a break before 'varsity starts again tomorrow. So yes, I confesss that it's a Sunday evening and I'm in the lab working on the PC and sorting some things out for tomorrow. Oh well.

Thanks to FirstFallen for a great party on Friday night and I'm glad to hear that she had a fantastic time. The band rocked - having never heard them before I was very impressed. And in the great CLAWparty? tradition if you give us food, something to drink, enough people to talk to (or avoid) and good music in the background we can't help but have a great time. The brief trip to Gandalf's afterwards was also cool - good music for most of the short time that we were there. Only dampener on the evening from my side were the intensely fun and painful muscle spasms in my back. Thanks to MoonFlake for the use of her floor to stretch out on and click my back into place again. But nothing a Myprodol, a warm bath, a hot water bottle and my teddy couldn't fix.

So slept late on Saturday due to once again seeing the sunrise in and the aforementioned back issues. Then there was much organisation of lifts and times for meeting people to be had. Went to Balducci's in the V&A for coffee and a couple of drinks with two of my school friends - was very cool to catch up again. I think that we provided some entertainment for the people at the tables on either side - they seemed absolutely fascinated. And I promise that I will eventually be successful in my attempts to drag Antoine out with me - I think you guys would like him. Then it was off to Gandalf's again (hands up if you're surprised) where upstairs was pretty dead. The DJ played some good music in short intervals so there was some decent dancing to be had, but he has a new girlfriend so there is new crap music to listen to in between the good stuff. It seemed to completely escape his attention that we were more than willing to rock if he would provide the goods. So we left realtively early and poor MoonFlake made the mistake of inviting ZenStar, Stuart and myself over for coffee. But we did leave at a semi-decent hour so she could get some sleep before Sunday lunch with the family.

And today finds me in the labs - pretty eerie on Med Campus when you're the only one here. I suppose I'd better get some actual work done - so here endeth today's lesson.

Short update today. Went to the Masque theatre in Muizenburg for a bit of culture last night in the form of the Claremont amateur dramatic society's staging of "Sailor Beware!" starring our very own Campey and Barbara's mom, Mrs Bowes. The play was great fun and I think that we should make such cultural excersions more often. Joined by Barbara, FirstFallen, ShadowsLight, GeekDotNeo and Sharpe the company roXXored. Congratulations to Campey and Mrs B and all the others involved for a fun production.

In other news I have not got my car back from the panel beaters today so look out for me in the mobile red "Renown Panel Beaters Lansdowne" advertisement. And be gentle.

Jo's party tonight !! w00t ^_^ See you punks there !!

26/09/2003

Having read MoonFlakeLogs today to catch up on the land of 'Chelle I was reminded of the taxi incident and was once again seized by uncontrollable laughter - probably contributing a large part to my current excellent mood. So I was compelled to update this here page and enlighten you all. On Tuesday (23/09) while MoonFlake was helping me out with the logistical problem of how to drop a rental car off and pick one up from different places at roughly the same time with just me involved, i.e. by lifting me from drop-off to pick up, a very amusing incident occurred. Now I have maintained for a long time now that if you can drive on Main Road you can drive anywhere (except maybe Italy ... but whatever). So, MoonFlake is driving and a taxi tries to do the usual casual move into your lane hoping you won't fight for it. Well Michelle fought. Now apparently she didn't notice him, but she did what most hardened Main Road drivers do and forced him straight back out again. We get to the robots and I look up to see the taxi conductor (i.e. lecherous money collector type - more on that some other time) in the passenger seat looking at us with an expression that can only be described as amazement with a healthy side portion of respect and he's tapping the side of his head with his index finger while shaking his head. Well, I took one look at this clearly amazed seasoned kamakazi taxi worker and it was one of the funniest things that I have ever had the privilege of seeing ^_^. Thanks again to MoonFlake for being an angel and helping me out and for the tea and banana bread - mmmmm.

Then I went and had supper and played pool at my friend Antoine's place on the corner of Bognor and Alma. Watched a very worthwhile movie on m-net called "Mumford". It was a great script and has joined my list of very cool, unexpected films. Then on the way home at about 2am I decided to take a drive over past Hout Bay, round the mountain, through Camps Bay and Sea Point and back home. Great views !!

So I slept late then went to 'varsity - yes I know it was a public holiday. And parked off doing a bunch of cool relaxing stuff.

And today has been great. I'm probably getting my car back tomorrow from the panel beaters !!! I miss my Gabriel. The panel beater's loan car that I'm driving isn't that bad, but you know that it was likely an insurance write-off that they patched up and are now using. You get the idea.

Going to the Masque theatre tonight to watch a play (whose name I can't currently remember, but watch this space). Looking forward to it. Then it's Jo's party tomorrow !! w00t - I love parties !

You know, by now you think I'd be over any psychosomatic reactions to dangerous chemicals in the lab. But I take my gloves off today and my hands itch - it always happens the first time I work with something new.

Oh, moved my Notes up to the end of July to an Archive page to neaten things up and keep this page under control.

25/09/2003

Oh my god ! Roleplaying was so great last night. Thanks to Tai, Lucas and Dave Sharpe for upping the paranoia, intrigue and chaos to the extent that they did - nicotene dependence here we come. So much fun. I'll be updating the page as soon as time and my nerves allow it.

And I started experiments today - baby steps admittedly, but it's still so cool ! Plus it's a public holiday tomorrow so much fun and debauchery can be enjoyed guilt free tonight :) And as an added bonus, yesterday's update did actually work despite me having given up on it because the progress was strongly reminiscent of wading through thick treacle. All is good.

Now I must go and book a seat for Thursday night movies - none of this floor bullshit anymore. So alas you will have to find some other way to waste your time now.

23/09/2003

Monday has rolled around again - sort of like the kid at school that no one likes but who just won't take a hint. Back in the lab doing stuff - but things are going very slowly. This is the problem with having to wait for living cells to grow. So once again my hands smell of ethanol and I am content. I have had a very, very mixed up couple of days since my update last Tuesday and I think that they warrant at least a brief mentioning.

Tuesday 16/09/03

"Equilibrium" was actually better the second time 'round. Now admittedly I am a newfound Christian Bale fangirl, but the movie is just so shiny. Apart from gratuitous shots of a sweaty, topless, muscled, gorgeous Mr Bale.... but I digress.... there are awesome gun fights, freaky children, great costumes and sword fights. What more could you ask for ? Retired to Lizards to play pool after that and much fun was had by all. Had my ass handed to me a number of times by GeekDotNeo, but it's all good.

Wednesday 17/09/03

The day went well up until 20:10 that evening. Tutoring had been good, I'd got some work done and then on the way home from visiting Barbara in Pinelands (to do work and get some decent sleep) a Bull Mastiff ran in front of my car. The dog proceeded to be thrown about 1,5-2m and then got up and ran off. The owner and his other dog ran across the road, paused about 50m away and then disappeared. Some really cool people stopped to help me and by the time the AA tow truck came to tow Gabriel (my car) away - with direct and clear instructions of where I wanted her to go, I had 5 people all helping me out. I was smoking the local home security guard's cigarette and wearing his jacket, not to mention drinking the fruit juice that one of the guys in the nearby flats had brought over for me. Needless to say my car was not very driveable and I was feeling less than stable (the shaking is only dying down now on 22/09). So after my car has been taken I go to the police station to report said accident only to be told once I get there that the owner has come in and reported that I hit his dog and sped away. Not "drove away", but "sped away" in a car that had to be towed !!! I explain this to the policeman who then calls the owner in. Now for those who know me, I don't like confronting people, but I will damn well stick up for myself !!! So he comes in and we have about a 10-15min argument (I won't be including all of the details here) in which he: (1) tells me that his dog is in great pain at home and his family are distraught, (2) asks me if I've been drinking, (3) informs me that he wants to sue me because his dog is worth R5000, (4) tells me that he would have beaten me if I hadn't "sped off", but not now that he knows I'm a woman and (5) that his dog was on a leash, but he let go when he saw the speed I was driving. So I had to deal with him (fortunately Barbara and her mom were there as witnesses and back-up) and I finally pointed out that neither of us could win the argument because we had no witnesses (not mentioning the fact that five people and the AA saw the state my car was in). My family have also been great !!

Thursday 18/09/03

The day just didn't start out well when I got a phonecall from a panelbeaters I have never heard of in Goodwood saying that my car was delivered there. I had asked that it get taken to Lansdowne - sigh. Then after phoning the towing company a few times they finally agree to take my car where I want it. So I sort out a rental car for a few days and go into town to speak to the insurance company. I then get a phonecall telling me that my car is in Tableview !! It was all ultimately sorted out and my car arrived in Lansdowne by 16:45. Donovan at my panelbeaters was livid at the incompetence that had been displayed. I myself was too tired t be angry any more.

Friday 19/09/03

I slept. So tired. Then watched Buffy :) Joined friends to watch "Pirates of the Caribbean" - very, very fun movie. Johnny Depp.... so cool. Any man who arrives in port like that and can carry off eye make-up like he can has my vote. Orlando Bloom allowed for moderate pervage when Johnny wasn't on screen. No, but in all seriousness, I really enjoyed the film. The characters were great fun. And I must say that Mr Depp is always at his best playing off the wall characters - perfect !!! Then joined MoonFlake and ZenStar at Alex's and lo was there much tv watching, music listening and general fun until the early hours of the morning. I have finally watched an episode of InvaderZim !! So much fun - now need to watch more of course. Oh, for all you people with mtv, be sure to watch out for the music video by "The Darkness" - hysterical !!! Fake tentacles, daisy tiaras, lightning shooting guitars, horned demon woman amd a large purple towel with arms. You're dying to see it now, aren't you ? And Michelle is so cute when she sleeps ;)

Saturday 20/09/03

Sleep was had, followed by a short trip to 'varsity to make sure that none of my munchkins had died on me. Then it was off the Garrick's b-day do. Hubblies !!!! YAY !!! Chips... good. Then after having fun chatting it was off to Gandalf's. I think that FirstFallen and MoonFlake have pretty much covered how that turned out. Although still fun. Plus we got to see up to Round 5 of the cthulhu tongue kissing beast and his woman going at it. It's one of those morbid fascination things where you really don't want to watch, but can't help it....

Well that's my life at the moment. And there's roleplaying tonight !!!!

22/09/2003

YAY I have utilised my leet skills and ShadowsLight's hopefully accurate floorplan to purchase myself a ticket for tonight's CLAWviewing? of "Equilibrium"...... mmmm..... Christian Bale. So I will either be sitting next to complete strangers or someone I know - here's hoping.

Weekend was cool - watched "Bruce Almighty" with MoonFlake and ZenStar on Friday night. It was muchly fun and good company. With memorable moments including the Prayer Post-Its (TM) and the "anal dwelling butt monkey". Then it was off the GobLin's so he could show off his new super shiny much surround sound appreciated DVD system. Plus they have cats... Saturday watched "Equilibrium" with Sharpe, Jon and Kate. (Hey you can never get enough Christian Bale).

Have finally finished my Project Proposal (TM). And yes was I relieved.

16/09/2003

Right, so I've been a bit lacks in updating this here notes page. Those of you who thought that they were free of me can stop rejoicing and can return to the customary gnashing of teeth. Last week was absolute madness - fun, but mad ...

Bad Boys II is a very shiny movie !! And Thursday night movies at ShadowsLight's place was great. Have finally played Munchkin Fu and any game that has a metal folding chair as a weapon has my vote (not to mention the "all your base are belong to us" card). This was followed by pool with ShadowsLight and GeekDotNeo and despite them being distracted by the hot talent at Stones I only managed to hold my own for some of the time (the force is strong with those two !!). My brother was down all week, but I only managed to see him on Monday (the only bonus of having roleplaying cancelled - aaaaaarrrrgh !!) and this weekend because alas he;'s been working. Due to my social activities and the associated lack of early nap time I have truely cemented my reputation in the lab. This was made official when I was asked whether I was only working half days and whether I was doing my masters over thirty years. But all is now well and I plan to behave myself - at least during the week.

Friday saw me at Norm and Caroline's housewarming - very cool place guys. And that trip left me with a nice bruise on my leg from Barbara's teeth (don't ask). Then it was off to Gandlaf's and the customary fending off of lecherous drunk males. But the company was as always top class and all was good. Saturday rolled around and the daylight hours almost missed me entirely for sleep was good. Went to a great 21st party at Kelvin Grove, dashed home, changed, played pool with my brother and some friends and then off to Gandalf's again to burn off some energy. Only ended up dancing sporadically, but did have a great time chatting to MoonFlake, ZenStar, SynKronos, FirstFallen and sundry others. Got to slap Michelle's ass to make up for the lack of drunk groping by the usual crowd. After closing the place it was off to Michelle's for coffee and the sunrise was beautiful. I must confess that by 9am (when the staring competition had been going on for about an hour - see MoonFlakeLogs) I was happy to crawl into a warm comfy bed and pass out. Despite some sleep I'm still tired ....

Hoping that roleplaying will be on today as I have been getting withdrawal :( - Amen to dat sistah - InfernalRabbi

Today was the day of the presenting of the "Official Masters Proposal"(TM) to the academics. Since I have been a lazy little so-and-so all year, the last two weeks have involved some serious reading, typing and just plain figuring stuff out. And it seemed to pay-off. I'm really interested in my project (always a bonus), I understand most of it and I'm pleased with the stuff I've written. Plus today went well :) and apparently they were impressed with me. So now I feel the need to celebrate .... I shall apply my mind to this :)

In other news - thanks to Michelle (MoonFlake) for hosting a really cool housewarming on Friday night despite being sick. And I'm very glad to hear that she wasn't evicted by the evil German lady. I had a great time chatting to the motley crew. Saturday also proved to be fun - watched "The man who sued God" and "12 Monkeys" (finally got to see that movie) and I recommend them to anyone who hasn't.

Oh, my brother's coming down next week (1/9) !!!!!! That's just for all of you who haven't been told repeatedly.

I must now unfortunately leave you all to put the last touches on my form begging for money for next year.

26/08/2003

There was wiki updating and all about saw that this was good.

The weather has been very entertaining. And apparently it's going to snow for the first time in seven years on Table Mountain tonight - if the Cape Argus is to believed that is. I think that's awesome and I am currently super glad for my beanie that's keeping my noggin toasty warm.

This weekend was great !! Thanks to all who joined our motley crew at Gandlaf's on Friday night. I had a rocking time dancing away my week's irritation and frustration. Oh, while I'm on the topic: have a look at Michelle's new page ThrashFan - recommended reading. My body basked in the pain and stiffness on Saturday (squash prior to dancing also helped).

Where/when/with whom do you play squash? Cos I am keen to join in sometime, it's been a hell of a long time since I played :P -- SynKronos

To all who are confused about the fact that Monday's log is only being posted today (Wednesday) I have but one reason: the loathsome lab computer died a magnificent death halfway through editing :(

What follows is my tale of woe regarding my car on Monday night (so pay attention):
Got back from 'varsity at about 7pm in just enough time to grab a bite to eat before having to be at roleplaying at Tai's at 7:30. After a rapid meal I made my way down to my car to leave. Picture the scene: gear-lock off, turn on lights, key into ignition, turn key.................. Is there something missing from this picture ? Yes - the vrooom of an engine or even the choking cough of my starter motor trying to kick in would've been good. I was greeted by absolute silence. Ever the resourceful panda I phoned Tai to ask for some male assistance to allow a push start. Lucas was sent out to play the part of my knight in shining trenchcoat. The geography of my garage bears telling at this point. There's a hump, then a gutter and then another hump before a slight downhill slope in the main parking area. You guessed it: we had to get Gabriel (my car for those who don't know any better) over the first hump, through the gutter and over the second hump before running to apply the handbrake to avoid having to wash, rinse and repeat the whole process. I think that Lucas made a very valid point when he mentioned, "It would be the two smokers trying to do this wouldn't it ?" We then hit upon the cunning plan of jump starting her. So the jump leads were dutifully retrieved from my boot and connected (at this point I decided to leave it up to the one who had done this more than only in practice, i.e. Lucas) the terminals. This was greeted by very impressive sparks (small ones are expected of course) that were reminiscent of arc-welding. Here endith that part of the tale because we pushed her back into the garage, Lucas gave me a lift and the AA was called in the morning. It turns out that my ignition switch had shuffled loose this mortal coil, so it has been fixed (and it was under warranty :) - words that warm my heart)

Michelle (MoonFlake) and I have decided that we all had such a rocking time on Sunday night that we should do it all again as soon as possible - how about this Friday ? Gandalf's again and as many Claw members and Claw associated as possible should do the trick :) Hopefully we'll see you there.

13/08/2003

Monday has come rolling around like an unwelcome relative - you know, the uncle who insists on pinching your cheek each time he sees you. Last night roXored !!!! For the less informed - it was the Dragon Fire 15 afterparty/prize giving at Gandlaf's. Congratulations to all of the prize winners, especially those of you who succeeded in ,making it out with your prizes still in your possession. Congrats to Thur Teem for winning best team - well deserved and to Michelle for her UA module - the characters had so much possibility. And to those who played Lucas's D&D module - I hope whoever played Jack had as much fun as I did in the playtest :)

Oh, and finally I'm mentioned in a CLAWmarks !!! :)

Talk about a big night !!! Everyone I've spoken to so far had only good things to say - and considering the people we know that has to tell you something. Respect to all of the people who partied the night away to classic and pumping tunes - my body is reminding me of my foolishness, but I'd do it again without a moments hesitation.

Am slightly miffed about the fact that Zanet seem to think that we somehow cheated on the whole voting process for #CLAWs - honestly.

Must dash - work to do... work to do.....

11/08/2003

Friday - the blessed day has arrived, but we fear a bit too quickly. You know when you have a list of stuff to do and the deadline keeps approaching at break neck speed, but the work appears to have develeoped a limp and is showing signs of imminent muscle cramp. Welcome to my week. Don't get me wrong, I've had a great time, but it's Friday already. I keep thinking that someone out there is using my time (addmitedly probably more creatively). ZenStar's ideas on time appear to once again stand up to probing by scientific wosnames.

Have just returned from Stellenbosch university where the EBG (Experimental Biology Group) were havintg a poster session - hey, don't knock it, there was free food and plenty of it. It's a pretty cool campus if you can just ignore the fact that it's crawling with Stellies students. Their SU is phenomenal - cinema, 7-11 - it gets my vote. I dod manage to escape the boredom and catch a bit of the stand-up comedy show that was going on. They were apparently at UCT yesterday - why does no one tell those of us stranded out on med campus these things ? Chatted to the one comedian before his set - they were a really tough crowd today (ever get the feeling that you're the only one in an area who caught the joke and is laughing ? You get the general idea ...), but apparently UCT get two thumbs way up there. He reckoned that it was their best show of the week.

Have work to do this weekend :( But that's not a real problem considering I am a lowly Masters student and we aren't expected to have a social life. I'd like to thank MoonFlake for adding to ArchAngelsProgressiveStory - I like where you guys are going with it. Oh, and I did try to vote for #CLAWs today, but I still haven't been registered for a month - typical :(. Holding thumbs guys.

Dragon Fire week is once again upon us and I'm sure that there will be much goodly roleplaying, LARPing and roleplaying had by all. I'll see some of you guys there.

Buffy and tea beckons.

8/08/2003

A lo' August is upon us and all Masters students (maybe just me) experience momentary panic at the speed at which the last few months have gone relative to the amount of work achieved. Okay, I'm calm. Things really not that bad - am making headway with my work and back to enjoying the life of a lab rat.

The weekend was absolutley rocking - thanks to all involved. Yes, am sitting avoiding doing work until lunch time when my brain is due to wake up again. But the good news is that mIRC has been installed by yours truly on the lab PCs? and much quizland score improving is in order....

Oh, happy news: Eric, my brother (responsible for my Secret Diary for those who've read it) is coming down to CT for work purposes at the end of the month. YAY !!!!

Remember to vote for #CLAWs all of you who can. I have to twidle my fingers until the 8th 'cos I is not able to yet.

Ta ta for now - quizland beckons :)
