It was built in the 20th cycle in the Season of Five Sheaves by the great Santil-afik, founder of the groundbreaking Academy of Slate. It comprises two pre-Fall artifacts held at the perfect relationship to one another in a gold filigreed frame. The first is a red case with two turnable controls, allowing any desired text or schematic to be drawn on the screen. It seems to be mechanical rather than fluidically powered. The second part is a far more complex artifact it is powered by one of the delicate screens that draw fluid from the Suns. It is a black device, requiring supply wth the limited cache of black cards it processes. Upon activation it turns one of the cards instantly into an image of the case screen. Because of supply limitations it is only used for those orders that require long term archiving and which touch on matters serious enough to require the personal involvement of the Overlord, such as proscription of liturgy or the establishment of new domes (in which case this mechanism also permits plans to be transported that are guaranteed to be authentic, preventing unfortunate incidents such as the proscription and slaughter of 3-in-4 at "Dome" Oblada). Despite access to pre-Fall technology having improved over the past decades the Overlord has elected to keep using it out of tradition and a deep, and well deserved, veneration of Santil-afik, the first scholar of the new age and the giant on whose shoulders we stand.
