SmallWorriedNoisesYou are on the archive wiki. The new wiki is here. Right, so I arrived back on the mine from gold secondment intent on keeping my head down and finishing off my shaft proficiency. It worked well for the first couple of weeks and then things started rolling in. First there was a project to reduce dust in the training centre, I picked that up part time. Then came an acting safety officer position that I took because there was no one else who could. As I walked out of the office having just accepted the acting I got a message that I should go and see the Block 4 projects manager. A little background, our mine is divided into horizontal blocks. Block 1 was just bellow surface and was mined open cast. Block 2 and 3 were below that and have been mined underground using open stoping. Block 4 is the next section down and is still in the development phase it will be mined by block caving. It is going to take over production from Block 3 in the first few months of next year. So anyway the Block 4 projects manager calls me into his office and asks if I would like to help with the second crusher project. It sounded pretty groovy and I need some decent project experience so I agreed. I then had to go around and explain to people why I wasn’t doing their stuff anymore, which was less exciting. Okay, so on Monday morning I went along and introduced myself to Andrew Main, the projects engineer and (now) my immediate boss. The conversation went something like this: It was at this point that I made a small worried noise. It is never a good thing when your boss is that pleased to see you. To cut a long story short the project looks pretty groovy, I am not doing any design but will be doing most of the dirty work, which is fine. The scary part is that the budget is R60mil and they seem very unconcerned about the fact that I have no experience. Still I get to sign my name as Bevan Timm – assistant project engineer, which makes me feel special. :) In other news: Kim is now officially a Bloemfontein resident (please feel free to forward any commiserations via me). Actually it seems like a decent place. It has a nice blend between big city convenience and small town friendliness. I, of course, am over the moon. 3 hours is a far more civilised driving time than 6 or 10, although I don’t think that I am going to save too much on petrol.
