Reinventing Comics: How Imagination and Technology Are Revolutionizing an Art Form

(Scott McCloud)
HarperCollins? 2000 ISBN 0-06-095350-0 (paperback) Indexing: ComixMenace?

The sequel to UnderstandingComics, but taking a different direction
rather than expanding on that book. Having evaluated comics as an art form, McCloud now tackles the external world of comics, their
creation and appreciation. He covers these in twelve "revolutions" that comics are in the midst of.

Part One covers 9 revolutions:

  • Comics as Literature & Comics as Art
  • Creators' Rights & Industry Innovation
  • Public Perception & Institutional Scrutiny
  • Gender Balance, Minority Representation & Diversity of Genre

Part Two covers the 3 digital revolutions:

  • Digital Production
  • Digital Delivery
  • Digital Comics

As before McCloud draws on a wide selection of examples; this time
he provides an index and a better comics bibliography!

Expansions on these ideas (especially digital comics and the
infinite canvas) are found at http://www.scottmccloud.com/

as well as a clear analysis of the external world of comix
McCloud makes thought-provoking predictions about their future, especially concerning the digital revolutions; as with
UnderstandingComics, though, these issues can be broadened to other media, including roleplaying!
(for example, consider the increasing number of games published independently in PDF format)

it took me two years to get hold of this book! firstly, Book
Warehouse on MainStreet? (now Wordsworth, I believe) couldn't get hold of it despite persistent nagging for a year, then when I was
working at a bookstore myself I couldn't get it - it turns out that the local distributors for HarperCollins? (JonathanBall?) don't have
rights to distribute this book (for whatever bizarre reason) so to get hold of it your bookstore will have to contact Harper US
direct or get it through a wholesaler like Ingram (as I did), unfortunately this does bring the rand price up (it's possible
that JonathanBall? will be granted rights when the stars are right, so try them first anyway)
