Rare Books & Special Collections is the non-Africana research component of UCT Libraries. More importantly it holds the Speculative Fiction Collection (BSF), a collection of science fiction and fantasy novels, writing guides, and critical analyses, including the old TolkSoc? collection.

The novels in the collection include famous and classic works from Victorian to modern times (including several titles from the Fantasy Masterworks series, also some classic cyberpunk titles), feminist science fiction (Sheri S Tepper and her cronies ;), a few popular titles (e.g. Pratchett, Star Wars, Star Trek, but not very many of each) and rare & old oddities.

A student card is required to take books out. The loaning system is separate from the regular library system, but the collection is browsable on the UCT Libraries database.

How to get there

• Enter through the main Library entrance and head left (with Current Journals behind you), past the study desks
• Turn left at the desk in the Nedbank Commerce Library, past the economics section, through the double doors and down the steps to African Studies
• Directly ahead of the African Studies entrance (across the room) is a large gate
• Press the buzzer and the gate will be opened
