MidweekMediaevalMufti

You are on the archive wiki. The new wiki is here. just pasting from my cthulist post for now - prettification, tables and planning later - or when someone else does it ;) - d@vid
(like me, muhahahahah! :) - Jo

yo,

this Wednesday evening you can make clothes for historical-type LARPs

Jo, who likes panda bears, and Michelle Haward, who likes teddy bears, have been persuaded that this week's Midweek Mayhem should be a little different (I'll run Great Ork Gods eventually, you're all free in study week, right? :)

(like I need an excuse to enthuse madly about my sordid hobby - Jo)

anyone who is interested (but this is particularly relevant to those looking for C15 garb for the first Vampire LARP on Saturday) can join in an evening of running with sharp scissors as Jo teaches us how to make mediaeval tunics (also, female tunic thingies i.e. sideless surcoats, more details below)

you will emerge bloody, but victorious, with a tunic suitable for any historical LARP (there are some that care about whether a particular tunic is "in period" - Jo suggests that exactly in period for late C15 is too fancy & expensive for what we are doing, we'll be only 50 years off, give or take) (actually, it'll be accurate for late C14 - Jo)

you will need to bring your own material (see below for the collective buying option)

MIDWEEK MUFTI

TIME: 18h30 for 19h00
WHERE: ---- address in cthulist post ---- WHO: Jo, with a gift of the garb; additional assistance by Tracy
Craig (who may or may not be able to talk about C15 clothing and suggest links to look at - I've provided a few links at the bottom of
the email) CONTACT: ---- email in cthulist post ----

(jo sez: there's no bell, so ppl should scotch my cel ---- in cthulist post ---- to be let in. bring snacky's or drinks if they want, i have coffee and
will try to have milk in the house) (flat is catty, for those poor damned souls who are 'lergic - Jo)

so, what do you need? MATERIAL

either I can buy it for you on wednesday afternoon or you can buy it
yourself beforehand

the expected budget is R60 (R70/80 for girly tunics), if you buy more
expensive material than I've listed here the price can go as high as R80/90 - if you want me to do the buying, it is up to you to get the
money to me on Wednesday & I will buy to your budget

if you would prefer to do your own shopping here are the details on
what to buy and where:

(if you have grander plans than a tunic, contact jo to see what you
need to buy; also, there are cheaper options than linen which will bring the price down)

BOYS (are men in tights period? eew): TUNIC

(well, yes, but the tights didn't meet at the groin, and tunics got shorter, so there was this very pr0n bit before they thought up codpieces - Jo)

jo sez: preferably solid colours, reds, blues, browns, greens, purples, black, yellow (basically anything except day-glo and metallics) etc.

2-3 meters of linen @ R20 a meter = R60
(or 2-3 meters of polycotton @ R10 a meter = R30) trim (optional) = up to R20 (per meter, depending on width, not necessary, but garb looks boring without it - Jo)
thread to match linen = R3

GRRRLS: SURCOAT

it is assumed you have a long skirt (any colour and fabric, plain
preferably) and a long-sleeved top (preferably plain too, preferably same colour as skirt), which you will be wearing under the surcoat

jo sez: solid colours, although you get some nice jacquard woven
motifs

3-4 meters of linen @ R20/meter = R80
(I think jo said polycotton wasn't an option for these) (umm, actually, it'll work fine, d2 :) - Jo trim (optional) = up to R20 (per meter, depending on width, not necessary, but garb looks boring without it)
thread to match linen = R3

GRRLS: VEIL

jo sez: oooh, also, if they want a veil, they should get some organza
(it's R15-R20 a meter, and you need about 1.5m of it). period for that time is 2 buns with a veil on top.

WHERE TO BUY

jo sez: you can get nice stuff at zhauns (main rd salt river) or at
fabric city (opp the castle). you'll need to get this during office hours, during the week sometime. also, it would be nice for people to
buy some thread that matches the fabric, as i have a limited supply of, like, 3 colours.

if you have any questions about organizing things, let me know, if you
have any questions about costume/material options, speak to Jo

if this is getting you all excited check out the following Storm

there's lots more SCA garb stuff to wibble at, check out the links at

(there are only about 4 links but each one is pretty extensive)
