The Lord Admirals

System: D&D 3.0
DM: Tim Lawrance Players: Adrian, Nicolas, Nick and Tyson.
Venue/Time: Thursdays 19h00-22h00 (from April 1) Download: The Known Ocean (setting, 217kB PDF)

Structure

The Lord Admirals will consist of 3 mini-campaigns, each one a single, longish, adventure in the Lord Admirals setting (+-5 sessions). Players are not compelled to play in more than 1 mini-campaign and other players are welcome to join for later mini-campaigns. Players who play in more than 1 mini-campaign may choose to take their characters over to the next mini-campaign, but there will be a +-10 year (game-time) gap between the adventures. Characters, whether carried over or not, will all start at the same level for successive mini-campaigns (probably MC1?: 1st level, MC2?: 5th level, MC3?: 9th level).

Setting

What follows is the introduction overview to the setting contained in the setting pdf.

The world of the Known Ocean is one that is covered entirely in water. The people of the Known Ocean make homes for themselves on ships, flotilla towns consisting of many ships and boats lashed together, the arctic ice, and enormous metal platforms whose origins are unknown.

Food is harvested from the sea, with fish and other sea animals making up the bulk of the diet. Ocean kelp is the only common non-meat source, though carefully maintained gardens and orchards provide vegetables and fruit to the wealthy on the platforms.

Obtaining freshwater is a problem and catching rainwater is not sufficient to meet the needs of a community of any size. The platforms have their own desalination plants to turn the abundant saltwater into freshwater. Ships and flotilla towns need to trade for freshwater or make stops at platforms to acquire freshwater. Larger flotilla towns use rudimentary desalination technology for their own freshwater needs.

Primary resources, such as wood and metal, are necessary at the base of economy but are not produced anywhere in the known ocean. These resources are provided by the mysterious faÿe in exchange for humans that leave with them on their steel vessels, a heavy price that not all nations are willing to pay. The faÿe are also the source of gunpowder, the key to warfare in the Known Ocean.

The Known Ocean is dominated by two forces: the Church, out of the nation of Coseaux, which has a strong presence on almost all platforms; and the militaristic nation of Dannin that controls almost half of the platforms of the Known Ocean after its one-sided alliance and incorporation of Lavis. Those platforms not already subdued by Dannin fear their attacks in the future, and many under Dannin control desire to be free again.

Coronation

The first mini-campaign is Coronation. The party have been employed by House Powell of the Trading Houses of Lavis, now occupied territory of Dannin, to eliminate Marcus who is to be crowned Lord Admiral within the week.

The attempted assassination was foiled by Nasheek, Marcus's personal wizard bodyguard, who managed to teleported him away after he was hit by a crossbow bolt. Nasheek was eventually killed, the local thieve's guild was wiped out and friends in high places were made...

Characters

Character names to be included when I remember to add them.
Adrian: A female cleric of the Church who is disenchanted with their corruption and policies. Nick: A female rogue who's grown up in the slums of Henge North.
Tyson
:
A male sorcerer from the mysterious platform of Myson; posing as a merchant because of the persecution against sorcerers by the Church.

Missing

The second mini-campaign is Missing set 8 years after Coronation. Lord Admiral Marcus disappeared 6 months ago - Admiral Vēhal has been promoted to Lord Admiral for the current crisis and he's hired the party to find the absent leader.

Characters

Adrian, Nick and Tyson have all expressed their intention of carrying their characters over from Coronation. We may have 1 or 2 additional players.
