Literary Death Match

In much the same style as MTV's "Celebrity Death Match" I feel the need to ponder how members of literature would fare in such a tournament. Feel free to comment or add your own. The author is the owner of BarbaRants, but felt that her talents were needed elsewhere. So here goes...
An interesting question was posted on the back of a bathroom door in the girl's lav in leslie social: "Sauron vs. Snape who would win?" They are of course referring to characters created by the great Mr. Tolkien and the "lucky-her-book-did-so-well" author Ms. J.K. Rowling. But who cares about the little people right? I feel the need to extend this question to the "Big Cheeses", the "Head Honchos" of these two literary geniuses (personal opinion - if you don't like Rowling or Tolkien..I don't care..this is MY page). So: Sauron (sorry if the spelling isn't 100%) vs. Voldemort - who would win? Let's consider the odds:

1. Sauron was created by Tolkien - a literary genius-god-guru (etc.), whereas Voldemort was created by Rowling. Therefore it stands to reason that Sauron would win (purely on the superiority of his creator). BUT...

2. Voldemort's powers are inherent (for those of you Bob's/first-years/illiterates...they are possessed within...he was born with them...you get the idea?) whereas Sauron needed a ring to be powerful. Therefore we can assume Voldemort would win. BUT...

3. Voldemort was defeated by an 11 year old with a wand (i.e. Harry Potter) therefore the advantage is Sauron's. BUT...

4. Sauron was defeated by Hobbits. BUT...

5. The Hobbits had help (remember the fellowship?!). BUT...

6. So did Harry (Hermione, Ron, DUMBLEDORE).

So the odds seem pretty even. Who would win? Any comments?

d@vid Sep 15 2003:

sauron has more myffic wossname, and is an echo-part-thing of the middle-earth satan-figure dude whereas (afaik) voldemort is just an evil wossname, sauron wins hands down (and sauron would easily handle three cardboard children rather than angsty-angst hobbits)

when I saw "literary" I was expecting, like, Martin Amis versus Oscar Wilde or something ;)

precisely what i thought. i mean, sauron vs. voldemort? ffs. anyway, sauron would obviously just bore voldemort to death with reams of banal descriptive narrative, or strike gothique poses atop crag-jagged volcanic overhangs, ring held aloft, and the flames of mordor belching about him. i know i'd be laughing too hard to put up a fight.

anyway, perhaps this is more what was intended. whordoeuvre?

wait a minute. Sauron woulda kicked voldemort's ass. but there are a couple of mistakes there:
Sauron put most of his power into the ring so that he could control the rest of the rings. so it was his to start with. He just made a bad choice. Sauron isn't the big bad mack daddy of Tolkien though. MORGOTH is. he was sauron's boss before he got cast into the void by the valar (or something).

That's all -ToothpasteDealer

I gotta agree with TootpasteDealer? on this one. Sauron didn't just need a to be powerful. He was already a majorly power Maia (I can't remember if that's the spelling) spirit. He just made a couple of mistakes. Don't forget that he managed to single-handedly fuck over Numenor, which was the major civilisation of Men in Middle Earth. I think them hobbits just got really really lucky. And only just. I mean, if Gollum hadn't been there at the end then things woulda swung right around and it woulda been Merry Apocralypse for Middle Earth. And yeah, Morgoth was even nastier. I mean, what can you say about the guy(Morgoth) who engineered Orcs? 2 Thumbs up to Morgoth :-) Anyway, yeah, so, Sauron would cream Voldemort. Morgoth would probably be overkill.(Tolkien info courtesy of the Tolkien Companion, a bloody good read if I do say :-)

OopMan

Thanks for the info. I tend to agree with whordoeuvre?....took another look ar LOR (novel NOT movie) and, yes much banal twaddle has had to be ingested by readers everywhere. I dunno, did Tolkien think it was cool to insert little poetic bits and pieces...what a time waster. Any other ideas for matches? Yes d@ve, you can include real life ppl if you want;)
