RoundNumbersYou are on the archive wiki. The new wiki is here. I have two small anniversaries to announce. Not that I'm certain of their exact dates, but I relate the beginning of these things to my 16th birthday, so seeing as we're 10 years on from that I reckon they're about due. The first is that my beloved Docs are now approaching 10 years old. When I bought them it was the tail end of the 'docs' fashion, and what I'd actually wanted was un-branded (read knock-off) flat, brown boots. However, since the fashion was waning, there was no more money in the knock-offs so no-one was selling them. The only brown, flat boots I could find on the market were the genuine article, and imported from the UK, nogal. I capitulated and went 50/50 with my parents to buy the shoes for what constituted a small fortune back in 1995, R350.00. (In fact I think it's only in the last three years that I've bought a pair of shoes that's cost more...) However they were worth every penny, and have been my most faithful pair of shoes. It was therefore with a level of deep sorrow that I noticed the other day that I've managed to wear much of the lighter stitching away with time. They're staying together through sheer force of habit, and the leather beneath is looking thinned to the point that I don't know that they can even be stitched back together. Not to mention that the soles are so worn that I'm in danger of breaking through to the air pockets any day now. Guess I'll have to go price new Docs sometime this week. Good thing I'm less than a mile from the shop… Sad thing that I'll have to suffer breaking a new pair in. Ah, well, I'll just have to hope they last me another 10 years. It was also with a little sadness that I realised that I've missed the year I've been waiting for at ICON. You know how on the forms you had to fill in how many years you'd been role-playing for? Well, I've been looking forward with relish to the year that I could fill in those precious double digits, “10”. I know it doesn't make any real difference, and I think I've done the least role-playing this year since I started. However, there's a bit of pride that comes with knowing you're suck by something for a decade. Especially since I have a habit of starting 'hobbies' and never going anywhere with them. I guess when I started, role-playing was then, what Jitsu is for me now: something I'd always wanted to do, but had never been able to get started, but when I did it felt like I'd found home. Guess now I have 32 to look forward to, since then I'll have been role-playing for half my life. Go me! Comment: docs (by InfernalRabbi? on 2005-08-03 14:38:36)i just bought a pair of 10 hole docs for £85. they were on special in a shop near the camden market. they don't seem do to bad too run in. Comment: cake! (by BlueHands on 2005-08-04 13:52:23)shouldn't there be a cake for celebrating anniversaries? and I've been meaning to email you (like you asked me to on KoL? mail) BUT I've been busy with arb stuff and keep forgetting. Comment: A decade!? (by ElfBoy? on 2005-08-04 15:56:19)I'm lucky if my shoes last me two years. Mine also wear through on the left big toe (although my current ones have a steal toecap so hopefully this will no longer be an issue) and where the toes bend (I must bounce when I walk or something). Admittedly none of them have been Docs(tm). Comment: Cats (by SynKronos? on 2005-08-05 09:37:09)My cats have been going for 8 years now. Granted, I don't wear them all that often, but I am hard on shoes. My average shoe lifespan is one year, although that is for my IS sneakers. They are dead at the end, cos I wear them well nigh every day. Comment: Not so lucky... (by OOPMan on 2005-08-05 12:15:13)Had less luck with my last pair of shoes. Lasted about 2 or 3 years worth of hard labour (Ie, at least a km of working a day, with more sometimes :-) New pair cost me R350, but they fit my feet like gloves... Comment: mmm, docs (by FirstFallen? on 2005-08-05 13:13:22)yeh, mine lasted 10 years too. they were reallly expensive when i got them in 1994 (a whole R400!!). i need some new ones, but there are none to be found in SA. :-( Comment: major (by ToothpasteDealer? on 2005-08-05 18:34:13)I have some dodgy white sneakers for 10 years and they're still alive, no sign of dying. they're some brand or other called 'major'. goedkoop is duurkoop? no! |
