DrasticMeasuresYou are on the archive wiki. The new wiki is here. I got a bit of a fright from the persistent stomach-bug thing that I caught in Joburg. The net result has been that I haven't had anything alcoholic to drink in over a week (probably the longest 'dry spell' I've had in more than a year) and I've been wheat free and dairy free for about a day and a half. So far though I detect no change. Well, other than the fact that the mornings after meeting friends have been slightly more pleasant and that lacking a cure for my usual Friday-evening tension headache sent me home early. So frankly, I feel that's more of a lose than a win on the alcohol-free front. On the wheat free and dairy free front, I'm still feeling as bloated, lethargic and "finished before I've even started" as usual. This may just be because I haven't given my body enough time to adjust. But, I don't know whether to be pleased or upset. I'm a little horrified at the idea that I might not be just wheat intolerant, but rather gluten intolerant, since this means I also have to cut rye, barley and oats out of my diet as well. I think I can survive as a "wheat free" person, but I'm not certain about "gluten free". Of course, there is the other option, that it isn't my food, it's just me. Which isn't an appealing idea either since it means that there is no escape from my symptoms. I should probably go to a proper dietician, or doctor or something, but I doubt my GP will be of much help and I have no idea if NHS will cover me seeing someone to suss-out any possible allergies I may have. Mum suggests I ask my homeopathy-obesessed uncle, Peter, about it, but I doubt that throwing his cures on top of my current "investigative efforts" will help. I can also see my gran at the moment she reads this. She'll be muttering about me not eating enough red meat and and that I require iron and vitamin B supplements. She may be right too. I feel like I've taken a pair of scissors to a healthy eating plan and come out with a very fine doily which leaves me with very little beyond meat, potatoes, rice and vegetables to eat. It's a bit of a bastard making breakfast out of that list, especially when I don't like potatoes. Mostly. It also takes a fair bit of cooking to make it work, which takes time, time which I never seem to have enough of a supply of. Ah, well, at the moment I'm trying to "gird my loins" in preparation of having to move to gluten free as a test. Although I might leave that to next week. Plus I might re-incorporate dairy, since well, life without cheese, yoghurt, chocolate and ice-cream hardly seems like a life work living. And if all else fails - bring on the cod liver oil! Comment: Feh. (by AndieMoore? on 2005-04-05 22:33:58)The stomach bug is doing persistant rounds at my work, which probably has something to do with unhygenic cleaning of communal coffee mugs. Hmmmm... brown in, brown out. And as homeopathy is basically poisoning your body to get a response from your immune system. Ack. Comment: A hint (by FirstFallen? on 2005-04-06 13:18:12)My dietician suggested I try this to see what my body doesn't like: Clear your diet completely. Eat only veg (not potatoes, that's starch) and chicken or fish. Then, slowly (like 3 weeks inbetween) introduce things back in, like other meat, then milk, then yoghurt (I know it's wierd, but cultured milk is digested differently to plain milk), then cheese, then grains, then wheat. You'll pretty soon see what you are not dealing with. As for the more energy thing, try eating low-GI stuff, and eat smaller things more often. It's really worked for me. You eat a lot less, cos your blood sugar stays stable and you don't crave sugar. Jo Comment: Sweet Potato (by Yancke? on 2005-04-12 17:38:26)If u do not like potatoes,{eek} try Sweet potato you can do the same things to it ie. fry, bake ect. It's very Yummy if it's done like chips. Sweet potatoes are better for you than potatoes as the starch is absorbed slower than taters ie. you dont fell like as much of a zombie afterwards. |
