It would help if we could get on from campus... well from all of the labs anyway.
HTTP Tunnel is your friend, since irc has low overhead...
And as I am now having to deal with dial up and a 20 mintue window of internet time, i dont think it's going to happen, maybe next year
Unprotected wireless networks are your friend...
Hmmmm unprotecte wireless networkks.

hey, why don't we investigate one of those over-the-web almost-like-IRC options?
quick poll (is there a plugin for polls? :)
- would you use any web-based chat system?
- would you use it if it required a firefox plugin?
- would you use it if it required the java virtual machine?
(ideally there would be NO such requirements, to prevent the old campus barrier to entry)
Norm used to run one of those... as far as I remember, it was very successful...
I'm somewhat ignorant of IRC commands, but would like to connect.
It would be great if someone could post a step-by-step on connecting to #claws from Chatzilla (Firefox plugin) within UCT?
/attach rucus.zanet.net:21 isn't working (however /attach moznet does)
Re barrier-to-entry, chatzilla should be fairly low considering the machines all have firefox, you don't need to be admin, and it's a 300k download (unlike java).
I guess web-based would be even lower... just need AJAX that feels like IRC.
Ok, got it to work here is what I did:
1) Install chatzilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/16?id=16)
2) Open chatzilla, configured your nick under "Preferences -> Identification" then do the following
/server rucus.zanet.net 21
/msg NickServ REGISTER your_password your_email@somewhere.com
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY your_password
/join #claws
3) Use "/leave" to leave the channel, and "/disconnect" to leave the server
w00t! Thanks for posting these.
Note for IRC n00bs: you only have to register your nick with nickserv the first time; after that you only have to identify.
You must log in to post.
