The box has some wear, but the internals are near perfect. Game was hardly ever played, so it still has almost all the sheets you write/draw on while playing, board and pieces are pristine. I will consider selling, but was preferably looking for one of the less complex games of this type, something I could play with people who don't want to spend hours or days learning complex rules, but more sophisticated than Monopoly etc.

Steps out from the mist and slurs:

@ Yanke
"Ye there are some cheaper games. ASL is all cardboard,"
And RPG's are just books and pieces of paper and plastic dice, the whole industry is about making so much more with the props given. I think a game that requires more intelligence and imagination, given that it may have a smaller fan base as the IQ lvl's increase, should be cherished not derided.

" but people arent falling over themselves to play it cuz many consider it boring. (due to lack of Pizazz, and frankly some people like simpler rules.)"
Yes I do concede this, but can the same not be said about RPG and wargames versus CCG. It seems the modern consumer wants less concentration and thought with more engaged interaction. Take the rise of game consoles, heck why bother to think just sit and mentally masturbate whilst pushing your little controller buttons. We roleplay because we want more, we wargame because we want in depth interaction, personally ASL is another link to explore the dynamic that was WWII.

Simpler is not better, just simpler, and if you find complexity boring and a real link to historic battle a lack of Pizazz (ASL has an incredible link to real history in WWII) and thus a need for realism, then yes ASL is not for you.

But to shoot a game down because its too complex for you, is a fool making an argument where they self identify, and you ain't no fool, otherwise you would be playing a first person shooter, or facebook or watching weeble....

Hmm... I've plaid a few sessions and never had problems to slow anyone down. You don't have to forget that you can play the game about getting all the treasure.
You can also set your ships in a way that he has to pass you and only with a special ability he can fire back. Especially with long ranged guns you can make up a good blockade but also the short ranged guns are not that bad.
And you can also try to stop him by ramming and boarding him. The bigger the ship the better.
Have you stuck to the rules for setting the game up? Especially I mean the distances between the islands.

Ah yes, in later booster packs you get fortresses. Very nasty things!

@Oliver: Perhaps is was just a fault with the particular ships we got in the few starter packs we bought. Not being able to move and fire means that you only ever get one shot at someone. And since damage doesn't appear to slow ships down, that means you have to have truly massive amounts of guns to have any hope of stopping a ship.

This is where I find the complexity of rules to be subjective. As I have no real interest in naval war fair, I’d go for something like Pirates of the Spanish Main with low impact rules.

@Hodgestar
Huh? Maybe in general small ships are faster in a straight line but all in all each ship has it's own speed. So you can have small ships which are very slow and big ships which are very fast. Take a look at the Wizkids website. There are more than enough big ships which are very fast.
The length of the line you can move depends on the card of the ship.
Or are you referring to schooner ability to be able to turn after a move.

I for my part like the rule which doesn't allow you not to fire while moving. It makes the game faster and you also have to think more. In addition there are several other factors which rely on this rule like abilities from several crew members or ships.

@Cyrophobia
Why does anybody wants to make this game so complicated? Ah, okay! If he likes it.

The rule I don't like is the broadside. It is very lame.
Another part are the chinese ships which are way overpowered with up to 6 masts. But I don't buy these packs so it doesn't matter to me at all.

Confluence and I have two packs each. We've only played once so far. I wouldn't mind tweaking the rules a bit if I played again. Using the default rules small ships are faster in a straight line (wtf?) and more maneuverable so big ships never get to fire on them, which makes big ships mostly useless. I also don't like the can't-fire-while-moving rule. It feels like a game with a lot of potential though. And the tiny ships are adorable.

Hi Oliver

I saw this being played one evening. As you say a very simple, but fun game. I liked the simple mechanics of tracking damage to ships and calculating movement.

Funny thing was the guys on the table next to the above working out some serious gaming rules for their upcoming "Battle of Trafalgar” game. All the calculations for proper speed and wind directions made my head heart.

Hey, has anybody here ever played Pirates of the Spanish Main from Wizkids?
It is a very simple tabletop for which you do not need much money. You play it with 3D-models of ships which really existed nearly on every table.
There are several faction which have been increased by several boosters.

As a result to the overwhelming response on the war game threads so far, I thought I’ll put this up...
So, why do YOU think war games suck?
1. Boooringgg ... It's pieces of cardboard. Where is the Pizzazz?
2. WTF!?! ... You expect me to read all that? 2 pages of Carcassone rules is all I’m able to muster, forget it!
3. Oh no! I just cannot take the conflict, can’t we just get along? I can so not stand all this!
4. Are we finished yet?! I wanna go home, this is taking way to looong!
5. No way dude, I’m not painting that sh...!
6. Boys and their little men! <sigh>

Feel free to add or disagree ...

And seriously, warhammer 40/fantasy, is what it is and is popular. If you dont like it dont play, as you clearly have opted to do. I stopped too after spending many many Rands. (Large Darkangels and Tyranids models) And Many many hours of painting/customising/sculpting.
Stop yer bitching.

Beside I think Wysiwig was a good idea. I was soooo tired of coke can dreadnaughts and God knows what else. I can actually paint minutures and i think it forced people to put together better looking models. So whatever.

And frankly some of those models look fantastic. Where do you get models that cool?
Ye there are some cheaper games. ASL is all cardboard, but people arent falling over themselves to play it cuz many consider it boring. (due to lack of Pizazz, and frankly some people like simpler rules.) I will concede the massive luck factor involved, but whey are you surprised.

Those cubes are called dice. You know? Random chance.

CryoPhobia on "Block War Games"

After posting on WarHammer I thought I'd see if anyone is interested in playing a block game or 2.

The 1st one is Hammer of the Scots.

From the Columbia Games website:
“Hammer of the Scots brings the rebellion of the Braveheart, William Wallace, to life. As the English player, you seek to pacify Scotland by controlling all the important noble lords. The Scottish player also seeks the allegiance of nobles to support a difficult struggle for freedom.”

The 2nd one is Wizard Kings.

Also from the Columbia Games website:
“Wizard Kings is an exciting fantasy battle game with armies of elves, dwarves, orcs, undead, and three human armies (feudal, barbarian, amazon). Players customize their armies and fight for control of strategic cities and terrain on geomorphic maps.”

I’ve not played any of these games before so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. Both of these games have their rules available online and VASSAL modules for online/PBEM play.

Hammer of the Scots – Rules here http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/query/cfg/zoom.cfg?product_id=3215 and the VASSAL mod here http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=com_vassal_modules&task=display&module_id=168&page=Files

Wizard Kings – Rules here http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/query/cfg/zoom.cfg?product_id=8501 and the VASSAL mod here http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=com_vassal_modules&task=display&module_id=83&page=Files

I do not own either of the games so only VASSAL PBEM. If you are interested in a game reply here and we can get a game going.

I am also interested in what your thoughts are regarding these games.

StormMaker's post touches on 2 important points.

Games Workshop Games is not cheap and they know how to run the money machine:
"I am sure to be flamed for this but Gamesworkshop and its products are to
wargaming, as Diesel to clothing retail."

The following is my take on it so YMMV. I played WH40K for 2 years before the change to the 4th Edition release and collected 3 armies. As everyone knows with the 4th Edition came the changes to the codexes and as a result new armies "forcing" you to start looking at new units to comply with the WYSIWYG type of army building. At this point I decided enough is enough, what was meant to be a clarification of rules was going to result in me spending more money to keep up with the new "put your race here" rules.

Games Workshop could just as well be printing money. Now, I think any miniature based game is expensive purely based on the exchange rate, e.g. Rackham - http://www.rackham.fr/html/home.php?lg=EN and Flames of War - http://www.battlefront.co.nz ), but constant rules and army updates is silly.

I've seen guys playing Rackham, the guys imported the miniatures themselves and Flames of War is distributed in SA by SA Miniatures - http://www.saminiatures.com . This brings me to StormMaker's 2nd point (Actually his 1st point).

War gaming does not equal WarHammer / WarHammer 40K:
"No disrespect intended but I think it is a very sad indication of the sorry state of wargaming if the current situation in CT is only that of Warhammer and the products of Games workshop."

So very true. There are a various types of war games out there:

-	Miniature based
-	Counter based
-	Block games

these are again grouped into tactical, strategy and operational type games, with minis falling in the tactical group.

Strategy and operational games are again split into hex, area and point-2-point movement games.

And if this isn't enough these games have varying game mechanics beyond just movement, i.e. dice based, card driven, I go you go (IGYG) and impulse driven.

I am sure the above is not exhaustive, but covers the most common types. So yes, playing only an IGYG miniature war game is a sorry state of war gaming.
