So I guess from my previous post regarding Hackmaster that no one is interested? I've just received my copy of Hackmaster Basic and I must say this is an awesome system. It's a very simple system (in my opinion) even though it might look intimidating at first.

For instance :

Skills are based on percentile dice with a character having a skill listed from 0 to 100% (obviously the higher the percentage, the more training a character has in that skill) and skill checks are a simple d% roll with rolling under your skill being a success and rolling over being a fail. (modifiers changing how difficult a check is by adding or subtracting from the roll)

There is a nice and simple quirks and flaws system built in that allows for some interesting role playing opportunities.

Combat is the most interesting part of the system. No rounds or turns or stuff like that, combat takes place with a continuous "tick" system with each tick representing a second in game time. Combat is such that it's very dynamic even allowing more than one pc/npc to act on the same tick, making combat way more fun and keeping players full attention during a combat instead of them having to wait their turn before they can have a go. (Read the combat example on www.kenzerco.com under the Hackmaster Basic section to get an idea of how it works)

Another thing I really like is that armour and shields work the way they should. With armour and shields actually absorbing damage rather than making you harder to hit (and in some cases armour will actually make you easier to hit due to bulkiness, weight, etc. The trade off being a far superior damage resistance)

Speaking of taking damage, there is also a Pain check, where if you take more than a certain amount of damage (determined by your threshold of pain) in a single hit, you have to roll to save from doubling up in pain and losing your actions for the next so many seconds while you writhe around on the floor clutching at your wound and whining for your mommy. ;)

Yes, like every system out there it has it's flaws, and since this is a first printing there are a few glaring omissions and errors. Also the basic set takes a character from 1st to 5th level only, but Advanced Hackmaster will continue where basic left off by expanding on the rules. Basic is just that, a basic system which will be expanded upon, but allow you to continue to play your character as is in Advanced without the need for any conversions.

Oh, and check out the dice section in the book too. There's a whole 10 pages (perhaps a bit much, but a very fun read non the less) dedicated to dice and how to look after your dice, how to prime your dice to make them lucky, and even techniques on how to roll the dice to get the best results.

So, would anyone be interesting in seeing the game and possibly play-testing it? I'd love to get more guys interested as this system in my opinion is the best I've come across since the good old AD&D days. :)

Hi all,

Anyone playing Hackmaster at all? I've been looking at the sample stuff and it looks really cool. Reminiscent of the old AD&D stuff. I've ordered myself a copy of the new Hackmaster Basic so we'll see if it's any good. From the reviews I've been reading though it looks like it's got alot going for it.

Anyone interested in playing? I'd run a game myself but I've never GM'd before and my actual play time has been minimal. (Last time aside from Dragonfire that I actually played, AD&D 2nd Ed was still around)

Cheers,
Kalmor.

Hi all,

New player here (very much a noob) looking for games to join. Would like to first sit and watch a game or two and see how things work and then join in on the fun. Mostly interested in the New World of Darkness stuff (more the Werewolf stuff then the Vampire stuff) or any board games or Munchkin games.

I live in Claremont, but willing to travel (as long as it's not too far) to play. :)

Let me know if anyone is running any games and you don't mind having a spectator. ;)

Hello there, forum lurkers

I'm toying with the idea of starting a Farscape campaign. The concept is still in its very early stages; I want to get the sourcebook, plan out some stuff, etc.. I would probably use a custom system instead of d20 (which is what the sourcebook from AEG uses). The campaign theme would probably be something on the lines of "fugitives on the run". :)

This will probably only happen next year sometime. In the meantime, I'd like to find out how many people have watched Farscape (or would like to watch it / watch more of it (let me know)) and would be interested in playing in the setting. Please leave a comment below if you're keen.

Hi, everyone. The game which I previously advertised here:
http://claws.za.net/forum/topic/17

is in need of an additional player or two after previous players were eaten by life and work. What I said previously about the tone of the game still applies. I can now tell you that the campaign is set in the Kintani Valley, a backwater province long contested between several clans and currently an Imperial territory in name and a poorly-organised no-man's-land in practice. The characters are special magistrates who are charged with investigating supernatural crime in the province: Doji Kamenosuke (a Crane courtier), Agasha Ishie (a Phoenix shugenja) and Togashi Nagataka (a Dragon monk).

Hi

I'm looking for a few players for a campaign set in the new world of darkness vampire rome. I recently got the book, and I'm still thinking up ideas so there's no insane rush, but I need players based on how often you can play, where you live and how commitment orientated you are. I need people who wont drop out at the last minute and will be there if they say that they're going to play.

My GM style is more story based. I like to follow the rules, but will allow some degrees of rule-bending provided that you can convince me of something cool. I try to tailor the game to what my players want, but you need to be able to get incvolved with the story and not loose interest if there's no action for an hour or 2.

I'd like to play 2-3 times a month depending on my free time and my players free time, and I enjoy long sessions that sometimes lead to sleeping over. Or, playing over as it were...:D

I want to start with the next month sometime...

please let me know here or email me at

I am currently creating my own custom spell groups for a system I want to try DM. The basic structure is based on d10s. Anyways I'm having dificulties in finding an appropreiate name for a spell circle that uses air and earth based spells. To give you the flavour of teh other names i have:

Restoration (healing and enhancing the body)
Necromancy (basically the opposite to restoration)
Illusion (based on creating figments of sound and images)
Telekinesis (forced/travel based magic)
Mysticism (magic dealing with magic itself)
Thermancy (magic based off temprature fire/ice)

thank you in advance

From CNN
--------

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

Hi

Someone I know has to move to the Mediterranean for a year and due to costs and other issues, can't take her cats with her. She is looking for someone to take them, with her paying all the expenses for that year. They are lovely cats. So if you want cats but can't afford it and aren't sure where you'll be in a few years, please take these cats.

Gypsy is 5 years old – long haired tortoise shell in perfect health.

Ollie – 2 years old – short haired tabby. He has a mouth condition but it's not contagious to humans. I am more than happy to take him to the vet for his monthly shots, if transporting a cat proves to be too difficult.

If you can only take one, that could be fine too.

In the year 2021, the Silent War started. No one knows who started it and all records have been erased. There were no warheads, missiles, rockets or anything of the sort fired in the Silent War. It started with a computer virus that disabled the military, utilities, all financial and scientific systems. It struck on 1 January, exactly 50 years after the beginning of the Unix Epoch. It is suspected that it was 50 years, to the millisecond.

The superpowers all suspected one another, and launched what attacks they could. This mostly meant sending in troops, which included an incasion of US soil. But, the soldiers were the least of the problems. It seemed that along with the computer virus (which was never named), there was a biological virus. This virus aroused the worst aspects of humanity, in about a quarter of the population. These people started riots, looted and destroyed everything they came across. All major cities were devastated. Fortunately the virus also aroused the noble aspects in another quarter of the population. These people resisted those who would destroy society, and they inspired those that were unaffected to subdue the violence.

Depite the efforts of these protectors, a lot of lives were lost and much was destroyed. Then, 256 days after the virus struck, the half of the population that was affected died suddenly.

Now, years after the war has ended, people are trying to rebuild. In London, the government is organising the people. Everyone is fed and housed. Those that are able to work are given luxury credits, when they work. Each day, tasks are divided up amongst the people that present themselves. There is no private enterprise, because everything is run by the government. It isn’t that it is illegal, just that no one has the motivation and there are no facilities that aren’t controlled by the government. Farms are run in a similar fashion, except those that work them are looked after better than those that work in the city. There are no other cities in what was formerly known as the United Kingdom, the entire population of the British Isles lives in London. During the war, everyone was evacuated from all other cities. There may be some survivors outside of London, but they are not in communication with anyone in the city.

In Germany there was a big discussion between the fans of the old SR 3.01 and the new SR 4.01.
It was criticized that there are no more pools in 4.01 and therefore a tactical element was lost. Another point of criticism was that during charakter creation the limits of the skills and traits are lame rules vs powergaming which don't work.
Also that humans are the worst race according to the rules and orks are the best didn't go down well.

So what do you think about the new SR? Which version do you prefer and why?

I for my part love the 4th version. It has a better and faster and even deadlier system. Ok, the WiFi-stuff is not to everybody's taste but on the other hand you can even play a hacker which was only possible in theory in older versions.

Oliver on "Exceptional Characters - What to do?"

Hello folks!

This thread has no actual background. I am right now not in a group which has to deal with an exceptional character.

Explanation what my understanding of an exceptional character is:
There are two kinds of exceptional characters:
1. These characters are considered to be demanding to roleplay and stick out in more than one part. This could be a bad guy in a good D&D group or a ghoul in a SR group. So these characters are exceptional because of the way they are roleplayed.
2. These characters are exceptional because of their powerlevel. It doesn't mean that these characters are very powerful all of the time. It could be also that they are extraordinary weak (like a kid in a group of warriors).

According to my experience these characters can be quite a hazard. While it is obvious with minmaxed characters who make the rest of the group feel useless the other kinds are in no way better.
A weak character in a group of powerful characters is more an obstacle to the group than a real help. Think of a farmer with high levels in skills which are useless for the campaign in a group of sorcerers and warriors.
How much time will be wasted to rescue this character over and over again? And why is group travelling with this character.

Those demanding characters like drakes in SR or bad guys in good groups can be a hazard as well because they attract a lot of troubles for the group like bounty hunters.
Especially when it comes to characters which have an extreme bad reputation because of their race or their profession (Ghouls have a horrible reputation in SR as well as vampires. Whoever works with them will find out that his reputation will also become worse if it ever becomes public). Why do the characters travel with them?
And how should they deal with the problem?

But my question is who has to deal with these characters? Is it the GM who should just disallow them or is it the group who kicks the character out when his true nature becomes public? And in what a manner should they deal with these characters? I only gave two examples what could be done.
Are these characters a problem at all to you?

Our group recently lost 2 players (one moved to JHB and the other is taking an extended break) and I tend to be the designated 'player recruiter' ;)
We're a merry lot of 5 players between the age of 22 and 32 who get together Friday evenings at my house in Brackenfell to drink lots of coffee and roll around some dice. Oh, and we might even roleplay a bit... ;)

On Friday I started a new CoC Delta Green game and so far all the characters are still alive & sane. So if interested in joining us, let me know.

Confluence and I will be hosting a DMs' Dinner at our place on Friday, 6 July 2007. This is your chance to sit down with other DMs and talk roleplaying.

Have questions you'd like to ask other DMs? Stories you'd like to tell? Having trouble with some aspect of your game? Want to share what's worked for you? And what hasn't? Stuck for plot ideas? Designing your own system? As long as it's related to DMing, anything goes.

I imagine we'll start off with a short round of introductions where people let us know where they're coming from - what systems they've played or DMed, what they're running at the moment, that sort of thing.

To be eligible to attend you'll need to:

Have DMed something.

Bring a small plate of eats and something to drink.

If you're interested, email me at hodgestar -at- gmail -dot- com and I'll send you directions. I imagine we'll start at around 19:00 and aim to finish whenever we run out of things to discuss. :) Confluence and I will supply additional food and drinks and various warm beverages.

I'd like to DM something again. I currently really like the L5R fantasy setting -- which is based mostly but not entirely on feudal Japan -- and there's a light independent system I'd like to try applying to it, so I'm extending feelers and sonar probes for interested players.

(If you've never heard of L5R before, but "feudal Japan" sounds interesting to you, I have some links for you at the bottom. I also have an actual sourcebook at home. :) )

What I would like:
* 3-4 players (of whom I already have one)
* regular weekly sessions in Rondebosch
* a light system: I'm intending to use the Window system, with some setting-specific extensions, in place of the very rules-heavy L5R system. You can read more about Window here, to get a general idea of what it's like: http://www.mimgames.com/window/welcome/
* relatively low-level storylines: you would probably never run into an Important Named Personality (except maybe to wave at him as he walks past you in a parade ;) ), and you'd be more likely to defend a village from a band of villainous ronin than to save the entire Empire from super-powerful forces of Evil.
* a party of relatively normal and sane characters
* a balance between combat and diplomacy, and so preferably a party with varied skills. :)

What I wouldn't like:
* all combat all the time
* rules lawyers, especially since I intend to eliminate about half the rules.
* a party of characters who are all secretly ninja / harriers / tainted / gozoku / kolat / members of other unspecified conspiracies; I'm open to some unusual back-story and some secret agendas, but within reason.
* continuing from the previous point, anything that will cause extensive conflict within the party.
* excessive melodrama ;)

I haven't decided where in the Empire the story will be set; that will depend on the character concepts that I get from people.

Background information:
* The L5R wiki: http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Rokugan - a good introduction to the setting, but watch out for spoilers. You can read the articles about the clans and families, but don't delve too deeply into the articles about individual people or articles about the Shadowlands, maho magic, secret organisations, etc.
* Some fanfiction:
http://www.inkdrops.com/CrabClanArchive/a.php?a=DaidojiGisei

Hi Claws,

I'm a relatively new DM, GM, whatever. I'm running a Mage campaign, a D&D campaign set in Sigil and I started another low level D&D campaign for the fun of it.

I have a very difficult player, his attention span wanes as soon as things arent going his way or he feels that he's not having enough effect on the world. I as a player like to have a very detailed in depth storyline so that I feel like I have a part in the world and I like to have an npc that I can feel close to.

Now, I like this player in general. When he starts playing well he's really good. He tends to do silly things when he's bord though. His favorite line is "I wee on it" This line is said when meeting the ancient white dragon god, to finding the powerfull artifact of doom, it doesnt matter the situation, if he's bord he'll try to get attention by being silly. What should I do. Clearly he's more of an action player. My other players like the storyline though, and so do I. I like twists and being clever. How the hell do I balance things out?

This game was published some years ago under the name Warzone. I was fascinated from the story then and since FFG will publish it, a company which is known for high quality products I will definitely buy it. Especially the announcement that strategy will play an important part is one of the major reasons to buy it since I don't want a game like WH40k where the better army list wins and not the better tactician.

Hello prospective game masters,

If you're looking for an instant campaign, you're in luck! I've been running a D&D Eberron campaign for over 3 years now and I'm resigning because I want to play for a change. It'd be a shame for it all to fizzle out now, wouldn't it? Here's a quick rundown of the party composition:

Bugbear bard
Warforged fighter
Changeling rogue
Aerenal Elf wizard - Intimdating facial tattoo somewhat mitigates being an Elf
Orcish druid - I assure you madam, my pet dinosaur poses no danger to your hamlet. Carcaroth! Heel! Heel! Bad Carcaroth.

We play on Monday evenings at 7pm (Tamboerskloof). If you're intersted, come and have a few drinks and a chat with the players and we'll see if it's a good fit.

Weregerbil over and out.
